Handa Medical Center in Battambang, Cambodia

HANDA FOUNDATION PROGRAMS

The Handa Medical Center has had several names since 1998 because it has been constantly evolving alongside the community it serves. In originally began as a surgical center managed by an Italian charity, and from that time until now it has continued to provide free care to approximately half of the country’s landmine victims – completely free of charge. Later it became the Handa Medical Center and it’s growth has been warmly welcomed, with patient volumes increasing every year as new staff, services and facilities are added.

The campus now includes a comfortable reception area, 10 consultation rooms, a pharmacy, a laboratory and a new medical in-patient ward with 24-beds. Approximately 3,000 patients come from all over Northwest Cambodia for care each month, receiving emergency and primary medical care of many kinds, orthopedic and general surgery, as well as endoscopic procedures and physiotherapy. The facility is also 100% green, as it is powered by an array of solar panels that cover the rooftops of all of the buildings.

The HMC has the unique three-fold strategy of providing high-quality medical services, providing on the job training for young Cambodian doctors and nurses, while at the same time providing entirely free care to approximately 30% of the patients who are served. By providing a general medical and surgical facility for the general population, local medical professionals can learn advanced medical techniques while at the same time helping the underprivileged.
